Kansas-made sauerkraut vinegar free

If you don’t like vinegar, this is the sauerkraut for you. Three ingredients: cabbage, salt, water. That’s it! The natural fermentation process gives you the perfect sauerkraut.

Hoganville Family Farms started building their sauerkraut business in 2011. The recipe has been in the family forever, and the decision to go commercial was based on the many years of compliments from friends saying how much they liked it.

Located in Baldwin City, Kansas, you can “porch pickup” your sauerkraut or find it in local stores. It’s also sold in several Natural Grocers. Here’s a map of locations where you can purchase Hoganville Family Farms sauerkraut.

A good sauerkraut is not only about taste but texture. Hoganville Family Farms is a medium to thick-cut sauerkraut with an excellent crunch. It’s not flimsy like sauerkraut made from thinly-shredded cabbage. It holds its superior crunch even when heated.

If you are watching your sodium intake, skip the sauerkraut. Hoganville Family Farms sauerkraut has 200 mg of sodium per two tablespoons. That’s 400 mg in 1/4 cup. If we compare Hoganville to the most popular sauerkraut on Amazon, Bubbies, which has 290 mg of sodium per 1/4 cup, it’s not a clear win for Hoganville.

The difference between Hoganville and Bubbies is found in the ingredient list.

Salt is simply more prevalent in Hoganville sauerkraut.

Also keep in mind the recommended intake of sodium is 2,300 mg daily. If you love your sauerkraut, find other ways to cut additional sodium from your diet.

The upside of sauerkraut is natural fermentation. This fermentation process creates ‘live bacteria’ (probiotics) that give sauerkraut its health benefits. It’s also a good form of dietary fiber, vitamins C and K, potassium, calcium and phosphorus.

And let’s face it. Sauerkraut is good, especially on a Reuben sandwich.

During our taste test, everyone loved Hoganville Family Farms sauerkraut. Some taste testers even went as far as to say, “This is the best sauerkraut I’ve ever had.” But, it’s the high sodium content that forces our hand as we give Hoganville an IMBHO-maybe. It’s a personal preference when it comes to how much sodium is too much, so we’ll leave it up to you to decide.

On a final note, Hoganville Family Farms sauerkraut cost us $8.99 for 24 oz. A pack of two 25 oz Bubbies runs around $24.00 on Amazon (Prime shipping). Looks like Hoganville wins the price battle.
