Humble nut butter

Nut butter has come a long way since the invention of peanut butter, which was first introduced at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. While there is evidence of peanut consumption and varied versions of peanut butter prior, it is believed that a St. Louis physician developed peanut butter as a protein alternative for his patients who could no longer chew meat. Interesting, right? You can read more about the history of peanuts and peanut butter by visiting the National Peanut Board.

For this review, we’re moving away from the traditional and into a more trendy nut butter made with pecans. Humble Nut Butter’s Spiced Maple Pecan is touted as being both salty & sweet. It has a clean label with only five ingredients, and everything is organic, except the pecans. It is vegan and “free from palm oil, gluten, soy and other BS.” However, this nut butter is processed in a facility that is not certified gluten free or peanut free, so know that cross contamination could occur.

The product itself does not have the smooth consistency of peanut butter; in fact, it’s grainy in texture. Though that’s something we might overlook, we couldn’t overlook the fact that this nut butter does not deliver on taste. It was neither salty nor sweet; in fact, we found it to be very bitter instead. We like pecans and good ones aren’t bitter, so we’re not sure why this nut butter has such a strong bitter profile.

Based on this, Humble’s Nut Butter gets an IMBHO-no.

So what about the company? Humble Nut Butter was co-founded by Jessica and John, who spent 2018 in Farmer’s Markets across the Twin Cities to get feedback from customers on their three signature flavors: sundried basil cashew, truffle herb walnut, and spiced maple pecan. It’s a company that touts itself as being an inclusive employer and woman-owned, and for that we applaud Humble Nut Butter. We just wish we liked the product better.
