Kraut Krisps: Unexpected flavor

Would these taste like cabbage? That was our first question when we ventured into Kraut Krisps from Farmhouse Culture.

Cabbage has a distinct flavor, somewhat peppery and a little harsh, with a lingering taste in your mouth. Cook it in your home and you’ll walk in several hours later to the smell of hydrogen sulfide. #NotPleasant

We expected the Kraut Krisps to take on the strong cabbage flavor, especially since the bag touts “Cabbage Chips”. To our surprise, they did not. Instead they had a subtle sauerkraut flavor that yielded to a dill pickle surprise. As we ate the crisps and let the flavors linger, we noted the corn masa coming through, and it tasted much like the masa surrounding a tamale. We were hooked.

The only drawback to these flavorful crisps was the seasoning did have a slightly powdery feel to it. But the taste kept us going back for more.

We also liked the clean label of this product with its organic ingredients and no artificial flavors or preservatives. #CoolAsCabbage Farmhouse Culture gets an IMBHO-yes for its Kraut Krisps.

Farmhouse Culture was started by chef Kathryn Lukas. While working in Europe she learned about fermentation and the positive impact is has on the gut. Now the mantra, “It all starts with the gut,” can be heard across the Farmhouse Culture product line.

Beyond the Kraut Krisps, you’ll find Gut Shot, a fermented, cold-brewed probiotic shot, as well as fresh Kraut (fermented raw, unpasteurized cabbage) on the Farmhouse Culture website. Besides Dill Pickle, Kraut Krisps come in Sea Salt and Chili Lime flavors. Both the Sauerkraut and Kraut Krisps can be purchased on Amazon. You can get a 6 pack of Kraut Krisps for $9.99 (Prime shipping).

We purchased our Kraut Krisps from Thrive Market for $3.09 per large bag (5 oz). We always like to purchase from Thrive Market because they often have lower prices than other online outlets.

You can also find Farmhouse Culture in local grocery retailers, including Kroger, Whole Foods and Walmart.

Farmhouse Culture is one of the innovative and emerging brands that can be found in the intertwined natural and specialty store channels. In the video below, CEO Scott Lerner discusses his vision for the Farmhouse Culture brand.
