Beyond simple oatmeal

If you’re looking for something beyond your regular, perhaps boring oatmeal, add Purely Elizabeth superfood oats to your shopping list.

This oatmeal has many great qualities, including organic and clean-label ingredients plus 6 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein per serving.

However, our team of testers gave a few dings on overall satisfaction with the Purely Elizabeth superfood oats cup starting with taste, thus our IMBHO-maybe rating.

While the granola topper is flavorful, the oatmeal itself is bland. We added a touch of salt to the oatmeal and it lifted the flavor, but when you spend $2.79 on a 2 oz oatmeal cup, it should taste extraordinary… not ordinary. We also shouldn’t need to correct the flavor profile by adding in salt or maple syrup.

Secondly, we had to make two oatmeal cups for the taste test. The first time we followed the instructions exactly and added water to the pink fill line on the inside of the cup. This gave us a lump of oatmeal that was inedible. On our second attempt, we added in twice the amount of water it called for and the texture was perfect. There’s much to be said for instructions that heed the best results—and those that don’t. We wasted $2.79 because the amount of water it called for was inadequate.

The lid on this product actually stirred up another conversation—a positive one. As we added the hot water, we were able to turn the lid upside down and it fit the cup perfectly, allowing the oatmeal to steep for 4-5 minutes. A+ for packaging!

Elizabeth Stein was in holistic nutrition school when she wrote down these words: “Start a natural foods company.” That’s exactly what she did over six years ago, and today the Purely Elizabeth product line goes beyond oatmeal to include pancake & waffle mix, bars, and even body scrub. She also authored a cook book, “eating purely”. You can find this book on the Purely Elizabeth website or Amazon. (The book was $4 cheaper on Amazon and free shipping with Prime.)

We purchased our Superfood Oatmeal cups from Thrive Market for $2.79 per cup. On the Purely Elizabeth website they run $2.99 each. On Amazon, you can get multi-packs, but pricing is inconsistent.

While we give the oatmeal an IMBHO-maybe, we give Elizabeth a big IMBHO-yes! We love her story, her philosophy (especially her pillars of living purely), and we even ordered her cookbook!
