This potato samosa is a crispy handcrafted wrap with potatoes and peas. Its packaging claims an “irresistible Indian cuisine”. While I’m not sure about this statement as it pertains to the samosa, it certainly rings true with the cilantro chutney that’s included as a dipping sauce. It’s bright, fresh and clean in flavor and takes the somewhat ordinary flavors of the samosa to a whole new level.

In terms of the samosa, it was fairly good for an appetizer out of the Costco’s freezer section. It was potato forward, which actually lent to it being a bit dry in texture, hence the need for the cilantro chutney. The Indian spices were good and didn’t overwhelm the palate, and the crispy texture of the wrap stood up to the samosa’s fillings. It wasn’t oily or greasy either. I’m still not convinced I would eat the samosas without some sort of dipping sauce. It just needs something to bring out the flavor and moisten the dry texture of the potatoes.

For $10.99 from Costco, you get a package that holds 16 samosas, but these aren’t tiny little fritters. They are 4-inch triangles that could feed a hungry crowd. If you have guests with varied eating habits, these samosas will fill the need of everyone but the meat eaters, with a vegan claim on the front of the box.

So will I be eating samo samosa’s? Probably not anytime soon, but I’ll keep them in my arsenal of quick party appetizers.
