Mid-September Gardening

Days are getting shorter and nights are getting cooler, but we’re still loving the garden.

Here’s what we did this week!

This is our last standing squash of the summer. It’s a second planting of the yellow criminal from Gurney seeds. The squash is quite small at maturity. We probably won’t plant it again next year. While it looks quite prolific here, overall it didn’t produce much throughout the summer.
We planted some additional spinach down the left side of this garden bed. Kale is down the middle and silk turnips are next to the kale. Sweet potatoes continue to grow on the right.
Here we marked the bed for planting. The parsnips are going on the right. On the left will be 1/2 row of romance carrots and 1/2 row of gourmet radishes.

This is our turnip patch. We thinned it out and you can see the baby turnips we picked in the image to the right. This bed also holds carrots and sweet potatoes—and now kale and spinach, too. We do our best to get the most out of the garden each year.
At the west end of the asparagus bed, we planted in some Bloomsdale long-standing spinach and some Palco spinach.
At the east end (from the second wire marker), we planted half of the bed to Detroit dark red beets and the other half with more silk turnips. Both of these were scattered in, so no distinct rows.
Yes, we ate these baby turnips. They were super sweet. Can’t wait until they grow to maturity!
