Oh, King Arthur, what crap you make…

My daughter was excited when she spied King Arthur’s Gluten-Free, Single-Serve Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix in our local grocery store. Eating gluten free is hard and finding little treasures or treats is aptly difficult.

Her excitement spilled over into, “Can you review this, Mom?” My answer, “Of course!” We set the cookie aside until the weekend when we could make it and taste it together.

Katelyn has been trying to figure out a way to contribute to the blog so she could earn her t-shirt, and because she purchased the product and went through the process of making and tasting, she was happy to sport her IMBHO shirt.

To put everything into context, my daughter is 29. She was born with a congenital heart defect and had her first open heart surgery at age 4-1/2 months. Born at seven pounds, she was only 8-1/2 pounds when we took her to Boston Children’s Hospital for her first of many surgeries. Because of the restricted blood flow during her first few months of life, her brain was affected, creating delays in learning and social ability.

Writing a blog isn’t in her repertoire, but getting excited about gluten-free products she wants to try is, thus our King Arthur adventure.

This is a product aimed at not only the gluten-free crowd, but children. It’s easy to make. Add 1 Tablespoon of water, mix, and place in the microwave for 30 seconds. Voila! You have a fresh, hot cookie.

Okay…that’s all fine, but King Arthur is producing and marketing a sugar-laden product that exemplifies empty calories.

Yes, my daughter liked the cookie. Full of chocolate, it had the essence of a fresh-baked cookie; what’s not to like. But while she sat there and said she liked it, she also didn’t finish it. Keep in mind the portion size is small, so not finishing it is a true testament to its overtly sweet profile.

It’s gluten free; it must be healthy. Wrong! Don’t be fooled by the call-outs on the label.

Seriously, how difficult is it to create a fun treat that tastes good but isn’t filled with enough sugar to put you on instant overload? Come on, King Arthur, you can do better than this…

Here’s a new video posted on January 25 from FlavCity with Bobby Parrish and it’s all about SUGAR. It fit perfectly with this product review. Preach it, Bobby!

We have a serious issue with the amount of sugar we eat every day, and the foods at the grocery store are not helping! Walk around the middle aisle of any grocery store and the food items are not only loaded with sugar, but they also have lots of fat and carbs, and that's a scary combination.
