Sugar rush weekend

Okay—so it wasn’t the healthiest of weekends, but what fun adventures we had!

Another farmer’s market in downtown Wichita and another treasure trove of treats. The temperature was brisk, but the wind settled and it was a beautiful morning.

Grand Prairie Mushrooms was one of our first stops. Except, we didn’t buy anything remotely mushroom.

Instead we opted for the gimmicky favorites—freeze dried salt water taffy and freeze dried Skittles. In other words, pure sugar. While the mushroom products would have been healthier, it felt more like a cheat day—so that’s what we did.

As one can imagine, the salt water taffy ($3 per bag) was a bit like eating crunchy cotton candy. The Skittles ($2 per bag) were like eating little rocks of sunshine—a crunchy rainbow of colors.

But what about those mushrooms?

Grand Prairie’s Oyster mushrooms are locally grown in Wellington, Kansas. Along with other varieties of mushrooms, this company creates seasonings and rubs with mushrooms, including Old Blue Crab Seasoning, Creole Pork Seasoning, Chicken Seasoning, and Steak Rub. You can purchase these seasonings for $10 each on the Grand Prairie website.

Mushrooms are superfoods—and a great way to start your day is with Coffee & Mushrooms, a blend of Arabica coffee and Shiitake, Lion’s Mane, and Oyster mushrooms roasted by PrairieFire Coffee Roasters in Wichita, Kansas. This is a wonderful local coffee roaster with specialty blends, flavored coffees, and single origin coffees. You can order online through the PrairieFire Coffee website.

Another stop we made was at the Konkeh booth where Artisan Alfajor Pastries were being served. It’s okay—we didn’t know what they were either, other than they were eye catching.

Alfajor pastries are traditional Argentine pastries made with two delicate cookies with a center of creamy dulce de leche caramel. In other words, more sugar! Even better—they had gluten-free options, which we purchased for our resident GF-free taster. Each of these pastries cost $3, and they were decadent.

This company doesn’t have a website, but you can find out more on its Facebook and Instagram pages. There are some terrific images of the pastries—with a phone number you can call to order. If you’re having a party, these treats would be a perfect addition to the menu.

So it was definitely a weekend sugar rush, but well worth the calories. IMBHO-yes to all our local favorites!
