The roots run deep with Amazing Grass
The roots run deep for this Kansas farm family who put a spin on organically grown greens. This truly is a “grass roots” movement, and the business was formed in 2002 by two friends who ditched their jobs and coffee habit to create Amazing Grass.
If you visit the Amazing Grass website, you’ll see a lot of interesting products from Greens (obviously) to Smoothie Boosters and Effervescents. That’s what we picked up at our local Whole Foods: Green Superfood effervescent tabs that give you a full serving of greens and veggies with each serving.
We selected the Lemon-Lime Green Superfood, that is built around the company’s “Alkalizing Greens Blend” which includes organic wheat grass, barley grass, alfalfa, spirulina and chlorella. It also has the proprietary “Spectra Blend” that includes ingredients like green coffee extract, broccoli sprout concentrate, and mangosteen and carrot extracts, to name a few. The ingredients list on the effervescent tubes is so small, it’s hard to read, so visit the website to get the full list of ingredients on these products.
The flavor profile of the Lemon Lime effervescent was citrus with grassy overtones. Some of the taste testers didn’t like the smell, but they did like the flavor. We decided drinking this through a straw might be best.
The other effervescent we tried was the Grape Energy. The ingredient list is similar to the Lemon-Lime, but there is an extra dose of what they coined their “Plant-Based Energy Blend” from green tea extract. The grape flavor comes through in a very light way—not too sweet, but sweet enough.
Both of these effervescents use Sorbitol, so if you stay away from this sugar alternative, then you won’t want to buy this product. They also use organic stevia leaf, but not in an extreme way that you get an aftertaste.
All in all, it was thumbs up for Amazing Grass. For some of the parents, it offers an alternative way to get greens and veggies into their youngster’s bellies.
