As parents, we try our best to feed our children foods that provide plenty of nutrition for their growing bodies, but how often do we think about feeding their growing brains?

After researching different formulas for his newborn, Jonathan, of Brainiac, wondered how much brain nutrients his older children were getting from their diet. He teamed up with fellow dad, Mark, to form a board of pediatricians, neurologists and nutritionists to create Brainiac Foods.

Brainiac offers applesauce, peanut butter spreads, and brain bars. You can purchase products from the company website which offers 20% off your first purchase, but you can also find their products at Walmart. We got our box of ten apple sauce pouches from Thrive Market for $9.99.

My 4-year-old shows several signs of ADHD, so this applesauce really intrigued me. I was curious about the science behind the “brain fuel.” When I went to Brainiac’s website, I found a whole page dedicated to explaining the science of the brain and the nutrients used in their products.

Brainiac uses 4 types of nutrients: Lutein, Choline and two different Omega-3 fatty acids. The website lists the different ways that each nutrient boosts brain development.

Because of the fish oils incorporated into the applesauce, I noticed the first sip tasted quite fishy, but each sip after that tasted good. This applesauce doesn’t taste like your typical applesauce, though. It has a distinct taste to it, which isn’t bad! Both my kids loved these pouches!

Like the Vermont Village applesauce that I reviewed previously, Brainiac applesauce has no added sugars. However, the flavor of the Brainiac sauce is more pronounced. The price is pretty comparable, but I think Brainiac offers more for your money: added brain nutrients plus grab-and-go pouches. Brainiac’s applesauce will be on my regular grocery list from now on! IMBHO, yes!
