Buck wild for buckwheat crackers
There truly is not any other snack in this world that I love more than crackers.
Saltine Crackers, Ritz Chips, Wheat Thins, Triscuits…my list could go on and on.
But honestly, I have been on a search for something healthier--something I can eat and not feel guilty about eating.
A cracker that is grain and gluten free but also plant based hmmm… now that’s interesting. This is why Better with Buckwheat crackers caught my eye.
When sampling these crackers, I wanted to add a slice of cheese,
but I figured I should try it naked before I gave you a review that was just about my cheese 😉.
I was a bit dismayed when I first saw the crackers… they were very small… not even big enough really to add a whole slice of cheese. Good thing I went the naked route.
The cracker had a ‘wheaty’ flavor (despite wheat not even being related to BUCKwheat), and they had a noticeable absence of salt. I am positive the box indicated sea salt in the ingredients.
So…WHERE’S THE SALT?!
Even on the front of the box there was a large picture of the cracker with large flakes of sea salt, but why not on the actual cracker?
But I forged ahead. I was not going to give up on the crackers just yet.
I ate a few more crackers and noticed they seemed a bit stale. Then they simply became sapidless (fancy word for NO FLAVOR). And then the lack of salt became even more apparent.
As a saltaholic—I must have salt!
Beyond taste, the crackers have no smell or odor to them at all except maybe the smell of the actual box they came in. The box offered crackers that traveled well and got to my doorstep without being broken.
But that just isn’t enough, and I can’t lie to you guys.
The Better with Buckwheat crackers are definitely NOT one of my favorite crackers. And they’re way too small.
So here’s the issue—I’m in a quandary. I added a small slice of cheese to the cracker and was shocked! The cheese really brought out the best characteristics in the cracker.
Had I avoided going naked from the beginning, I wouldn’t be waffling on my review, but now I’m a complete waffler! SMH
I was reading about the company’s history behind their tiny crackers and discovered the founder of the company was actually a cheesemaker before baking crackers!
So that’s why the crackers paired so well with cheese. What was at first an
IMBHO-maybe is now an
IMBHO-yes with cheese!
For more background, a woman named Karen Getz founded the company in 2014 in the basement of her home.
Karen was a bread-baker, a dairy-farmer, and… SHOCKER here, an award-winning cheesemaker! Since gluten-free diets were trending back in 2014, she set out on a gluten-free journey to make a cracker that paired well with cheese. And…she did it!
This cracker MUST be paired with cheese!
But I have one wish for these crackers: I wish I got more crackers for my money!
The 4.25 oz box cost $4.99 on Thrive Market. For a bit lower price, you can go to Amazon, which sells a 6-pack of these crackers for about $21 ($3.50 per box). I think if I buy them again, I will certainly get the 6-pack from Amazon!
Oh, and one final note.
On researching buckwheat, I discovered it is a nutrient-rich superfood that also happens to be low in calories!
Its benefits range from being low on the glycemic index, offering 9 different amino acids and several key vitamins, being a great source of fiber, and even HELPING THE BEES!
Save the planet,
help the bees,
and don’t forget
to ADD THE CHEESE!
