Cosmic Crisp apple sensation
The first of December brought us a new apple in our produce department, Cosmic Crisp. “Sweet & crisp” is how the apple producer describes the Cosmic Crisp, “a cross between the ‘Enterprise’ and ‘Honeycrisp’”.
For all the tasters involved in our trial, we found it to be sweet and crisp, too, but also noted the tartness of a Granny Smith green apple. That gives it a full flavor profile that hits on sweet and sour and provides a crunchy, juicy bite. All thumbs were up in the group for the new Cosmic Crisp.
After we tried the apple, there were a couple slices we set to the side. Two hours later we came back and noted this apple had not turned brown like other apples. To us that’s an even bigger win.
The Cosmic Crisp provides a little over 19 grams of carbs and 3.3 grams of fiber, rounding out at 72 calories for 1 medium apple. Because it sustains its crispy, flavorful profile and doesn’t lose its apple flesh color, if you’re a carb counter, you can portion out this apple for consumption.
According to the website, this apple has been in development for over 20 years, led by Bruce Barritt, Horticulturist and developer of the Cosmic Crisp. It’s a good story of collaboration and determination to create this “new and delightful apple”.
For us, it’s a definite IMBHO-yes, and while it took 20 years to bring the Cosmic Crisp to market, we think it was 20 years well spent.
What’s your favorite apple variety? We’d love to hear from you.
