What’s the best part of Spring? The weather? The birds? The flowers? All wonderful—but our pick is the opening of Farmer’s Markets everywhere.

On Saturday the Farmer’s Market season launched in Wichita, Kansas. The sun was shining and the crowds gathered, breaking the winter doldrums. We were excited to visit the many booths populated with spring honey, raw milk cheese, Mexican foods, jams & jellies, flowering plants, hot house tomatoes, and what turned into our favorite (and one of the longest lines) Crust & Crumb Co.

While we neglected to take a photo while we stood in line, mesmerized by the beautiful bready treats, we did get photos of our haul. Oh, not all of it. We ate quite a bit before we considered blogging our find—because it was just too tempting. We were sampling everything.

Deciding what to purchase wasn’t easy. There were many enticing selections. We finally landed on the buttery croissants (half dozen), lemon drop Kouign Amman, chocolate croissant, ham & cheese croissant, and a Ciabatta loaf.

The croissants were perfection—so many buttery layers and full of flavor. Kouign Amman is Celtic for “butter cake”. (We had to look this one up.) These little gems were dense, sweet, salty, and wonderfully buttery and they had a burst of fresh lemon flavor. Our taste buds were dancing!

Prices were fantastic. With everything we purchased, we spent $31.00 total. But it won’t stop there. We’ll be on the prowl for Crust & Crumb Co. with every Farmer’s Market and Street Fair we visit over the next several months.

Even more fortunate for us, this company is just down the road in Newton, Kansas, so when we can’t find them at a weekend event, we’ll simply make our way to their doorstep. Crust & Crumb Co. holds bakery sales every Saturday morning from 8-11.

Crust & Crumb’s secret to their baked treats starts with the Turkey Red Winter Wheat flour. The wheat is grown on the family farm of Sharon Entz, who then grinds and transforms the wheat using a long, slow fermentation process to build flavor. After thousands of loaves, she definitely has perfected the art of baking bread.

Other pastries on the menu include spinach dill croissants, feta chive croissants, gourges (a cheese puff pastry), galettes & hand pies (made with seasonal fruit & spices), and more. Beyond pastries, the bakery makes sourdough loaves (jalapeno cheese, kalamata olive, apricot sesame, to name a few). There are also Ciabatta loaves, Baguettes, Challahs, pretzel buns, Brioche buns, and specialty Focaccias (roasted garlic, pesto, chard & parm, and more). It’s an endless list of baked perfection. Forget calorie counting—just enjoy life for a moment and indulge in these incredible baked goods from an artisan bakery.

Is it really that good, you ask? IMBHO-yes, yes, and yes! So fresh. So flaky. The absolute perfect blend of crust & crumb.
