Meat nuts

If for nothing more than a moment of sheer happiness and joy, we’re covering Dietz Nuts. To us, it’s more about the marketing of this product than the actual product itself, which is a meat snack derived from a combination of pork and beef.

For all you carnivores out there, it appears to be a winner in terms of taste. The label doesn’t include a lot of objectionable ingredients, though most people don’t eat meat snacks for the health of it. The flavor profile gives you a hint of salty smoke and the texture is as expected. From all the taste testers of Dietz Nuts, it was thumbs up to meat nuts.

Out of curiosity, we decided to compare the Dietz Nuts ingredient list against another popular meat snack brand. There is a significant difference, with Dietz winning hands down for a cleaner label.

Here’s what’s included in the other popular brand:

IngredientsBEEF, WATER, SALT, CORN SYRUP, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF FLAVORS, DEXTROSE, SUGAR, SODIUM ERYTHORBATE, LACTIC ACID STARTER CULTURE, CITRIC ACID, SODIUM NITRITE, BHA, BHT, COLORS (CARAMEL, RED 3, ANNATTO).

Here we quickly noted the addition of BHA and BHT. Europe banned these ingredients based on research that links them to cancer. In the U.S., they are in butter, meats, chewing gum, snack foods and dehydrated potatoes. Even though the U.S. does not consider them carcinogens, there are notations that some data shows they cause cancer in animals.

We also noted the addition of artificial colorants. Not good.

Thankfully, Dietz Nuts does not include these types of preservatives or food colorings.

Dietz Nuts falls under the Dietz & Watson banner, which has a long history dating back to 1939 when Gottlieb Dietz and Walter Watson developed their original German Bratwurst recipe. This is after Dietz spent nearly two decades perfecting his sausage making skills.

Steeped in the tradition of family, quality and integrity, Dietz & Watson has a story worth reading. The company continues to evolve and stay relevant, proven by the Deitz Nuts product.
