Last week, I reviewed Ka-Pop, a snack company that uses sorghum, a healthier alternative, as their key ingredient. If you missed it, check out the review here.

PeaTos has a similar goal: creating healthier snacks by substituting out the corn flour or cornmeal used in most main-stream snacks. Instead of using sorghum, PeaTos uses… you guessed it, peas!

You can find PeaTos on Amazon and Thrive as well as at Kroger Stores and Sprouts. Our bag of Classic Onion rings came from the Thrive Market for $4.79, which I consider a little high. That’s almost $2 per ounce!

I was also less than impressed with PeaTos website. Though the bright colors and design were done well, I wish they would have shared more about their story. What they did share was misleading. The mascot, DJ_P, was credited for creating the snacks. DJ_P is a girl, so that originally made me assume that this was a woman-owned company. However, after viewing the video below, Nick Desai introduced himself as the founder and CEO. Not a huge deal, but I appreciate more transparency when I am looking into a company’s story.

PeaTos listed nutrition facts on their website in a side-by-side chart comparing their snacks to Cheetos, Funyuns and Doritos. This I did like. Check out the comparisons here. Overall, PeaTos has less calories, less fat and less sodium. What’s more: PeaTos are higher in fiber and protein!

A more nutritious snack is great, but the flavor also needs to hold up in order for it to be successful. Did PeaTos pull it off? My kids would tell you: absolutely not! At least not with the Classic Onion flavor. Personally, I thought these onion rings were pretty good. They were nice and crunchy, and the flavor was okay. Not great, but definitely not bad.

Considering the higher price and the lack of transparency in the company’s story, I have to give this product a maybe, IMBHO.
