Soom to be gone
I was so incredibly and undoubtedly excited for Soom’s Snack Bites (Tahini Double Chocolate) to be delivered with my Thrive Market order, even though they were made from dates.
You may have read in one of my other blogs that I don’t care for dates… at all.
When I was looking at the image on the pouch as I took them out of the box, it showed great detail and tempted me to open them right away.
It tested my resolve, and it took a lot of self-control to hold tight, so I could start writing this blog before trying them.
I found these delectable-looking snacks on Thrive Market for $6.99 for a little over 5 oz.
Tad expensive? I would say so…
You can also buy any of Soom’s products at online stores like Walmart, Amazon, and Whole Foods, just to name a few.
But to compare prices: for three bags at Walmart, it costs $41.78 (which comes out to be nearly $14.) THAT. IS. INSANE.
I could never splurge $14 on a snack; that’s just too much…but I can work with $7 for the occasional sweet treat.
All I have to say at this point is this:
these little fun-sized bites BETTER be good!
This product is plant-based, vegan, and kosher and there are no added or artificial sweeteners or colors.
They are also free of refined sugars, sugar alcohols, and preservatives. I can get on board with this!
“Real and simple ingredients”. One of my favorite phrases.
The ingredients in the bites include organic dates, tahini, organic unsweetened chocolate, organic coconut sugar, organic cacao butter, oats, cacao powder, sesame seeds, vanilla extract, and sea salt.
But what I’m wondering is, what is tahini? They keep telling me,
“Everything is better with tahini”!
I must try it!
Tahini is a paste that is made from roasted sesame seeds. It’s used as a Mediterranean dip or spread and they say it is marvelous!
What had me most interested in these little snack bites was that the three founders of Soom
promised the bites would provide some quick energy and you could count on them to keep your day moving.
All thanks to dates and tahini.
Hmmm… I can test that theory. I’m mom to a toddler!
The company was founded by 3 sisters: Amy, Jackie, and Shelby, in 2011 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Prior to Pennsylvania, they lived in a little Mediterranean town years ago and this is where they were introduced to the
“marvelous mix of sweet-nuttiness from dates and tahini”, and “wholesome ingredients that have starred in dishes for centuries”.
Amy, Jackie, and Shelby all shared the same goal: they wanted to bring the taste and passion for tahini home to the United States. In the states, they couldn’t find anything like it, so they crafted this internationally influenced blend.
My first impression of Soom was the little picture of the bites and the little emblem stating the bites are “sweet, soft, and chewy”.
The bites looked like little cubes of fudgy goodness. Like little brownie bites.
It almost looked like coconut pieces in the picture, but I knew there was just coconut sugar in these bites and not actual pieces of coconut, so that threw me off for a bit.
Disclaimer:
It took multiple hours of typing this blog… (no, it didn’t take me hours to actually write the blog, but I kept getting distracted by a cluttered space and errands I had to run).
But every time I needed to do something aside from writing this blog, I couldn’t think about anything but trying my new snack. Being excited was an understatement.
FINALLY, the moment arrived and I got to open the pouch, after waiting oh, so impatiently.
The cubes were just a little bit bigger than dice. The cubed chunk looked much like a dark chocolate brownie with little shaved pieces of either almonds or coconut.
The bag smelled of unsweetened cocoa, a bitter smell, but when paired with the oats and tahini (I think that is what I smelled…a bit unfamiliar to me),
it made for a very pleasant aroma. The smell made me even more excited to try them, and now I couldn’t wait any longer.
I popped the fun-sized nugget into my mouth–it was chewy like fudge. But it wasn’t tough.
It was soft, sweet, and chewy…just like the pouch said it would be.
The small morsel was incredibly tasty, which blended a sweet, fudgy flavor with oats and just a hint of bitterness, and that really made the bite absolutely perfect.
What’s crazy is that I could taste the organic dates. Even though I don’t like dates, they really brought out the flavor in the organic chocolate.
I now have a major problem.
I’m addicted, and I can’t stop eating them.
One serving of bites is 3 bites… I most definitely ate 2 servings before being able to stop myself (it was really hard, but I did start to get a tummy ache–but in a good way haha).
These bites are so dang good, I don’t even care how expensive they are, and to be honest, I’ve already forgotten how much they even cost!
We’ll just say that I ate a serving for each of us this time, but next time,
you’ll have to grab a pouch of your own!
In my brutally honest opinion… This sweet treat is a must-try, and I most definitely will be purchasing again!
IMBHO-YES! YES! YES!!!!! These are not just delicious bites…these are delectable nuggets of chocolate love.
