Can you ever go wrong with apple sauce?

With two young kids, apple sauce is something that I need to keep on hand at all times. It’s the perfect snack or addition to meals. I know that if my kids won’t eat anything else, they’ll always eat their apple sauce. Plus, it’s healthy, right?

Vermont Village is a Stonewall Kitchen brand that produces several flavors of apple cider vinegar and apple sauce. These products are naturally flavored using only organic ingredients.

We tried the apple sauce with mixed berries from Stonewall Kitchen’s website for $4.50. That’s a couple dollars more than I usually spend on apple sauce, so I did a side-by-side comparison of the nutritional value to see what the extra dollars paid for.

The first thing I notice is that our normal brand of apple sauce adds extra sugar, food coloring and flavor. In contrast, Vermont Village includes only organic fruit and ascorbic acid in their sauce. These differences obviously affect the nutritional value. Vermont village has 20 fewer calories in their sauce and significantly fewer carbs and sugar. It also has an extra gram of fiber and higher potassium. No added sugar or food coloring is a big win for me!

So how was the flavor affected?

We could obviously tell that this sauce wasn’t near as sugary, but that was okay! It was still delicious! I really enjoyed the addition of berries to this sauce. The berry flavor was subtle, but naturally sweet.

Vermont Village wins this comparison, even with the higher cost. I feel good about feeding my kids apple sauce that doesn’t have added sugar and food coloring in it. IMBHO, yes!
