Air-popped snack to the moon and back

Tasty? Perhaps. Satisfying? Hmmm… for 10 minutes or so.

Several minutes after eating a single-serving bag of Nova Crisps, your brain and your stomach will be wondering if you really had a snack. Maybe it was just a mirage! Light, airy, crispy, crunchy nothingness.

In all fairness, we tried these snacks on their own. It’s the best way to indicate if a product tastes good or not …don’t cover it up with something else. They have a very light flavor, a hint of sweet from the added 2 grams of sugar, and the paprika gives them a slight onion-y flavor, which is interesting.

Can you believe Funyuns are over 50 years old? Where has time gone?

If you’re old school and remember Funyuns, which have been around since 1969, Nova Crisps are reminiscent of that flavor profile. Funyuns are more robust in flavor, but they are also heavier in ingredients (20+), which includes MSG. #sadtruth

Nova Crisps do not have MSG on the label, and the Sea Salt version of these crisps, which we tried, have a clean label.

  • Ingredients: Chip (Tapioca Flour, Fresh Cassava, Sugar, Salt, Paprika Extract), Olive Oil, Sea Salt

Perhaps pairing Nova Crisps with cheese or dips would keep you from craving more beyond the single-serving bag. The crisps are well-made and would stand up to any topping or dip you desire.

There were a few taste testers who didn’t get any real flavor out of these crisps. It depends on the palate. If you like bold flavors, these aren’t for you. If you don’t mind eating styrofoam (i.e. something with light flavor with that airy texture), then you might just enjoy Nova Crisps.

Looking to the company who delivered this product to the snack market, we found the Nova Crisp brand falls under the Duogreen umbrella. Duogreen appears to be socially aware, focusing on reducing their environmental footprint. Their vision statement says, “Living healthy is getting complicated, but we are here to simplify that.” We can see how Nova Crisp fits the “simplify” mantra, and that’s not a bad thing.

Another positive about the Duogreen company is their Lift Hire program, which supports and hires individuals with disabilities. While we give Nova Crisp an IMBHO-maybe (they’re not for everyone), we give Duogreen an IMBHO-yes. The company has values of “Excellence, People, & Fun”. We like that a lot!

If you’re interested in trying Nova Crisps, you can find them on Amazon for $11.95 (6 pack), though it appears some of the variety options currently are out of stock.
